On July 25th, the Parador “Costa da Morte” opened its doors, with interior design carried out by Grupo Ramón García and Sutega. The establishment features 63 rooms, a restaurant, a café, and common areas.

The Parador offers a strikingly wild natural environment. The Costa da Morte is named for being the coast where the sun sets, the place of finis solis. It boasts the latest sunset on the continental coast and is a unique area of estuaries and rias, where the sea moves freely. There are four rias: Corcubión, Lides, Camariñas—where the Parador is located—and Corme e Laxe. These areas are ideal for driving or cycling as they remain largely untouched.

Due to the terraced layout, similar to vineyards in the Riberira Sacra, the entrance is at ground level, and to access the rooms, guests must go down rather than up. The five floors are adorned with artworks that vividly narrate the recent history of the region.

The design is inspired by local plants such as the bellflower and gorse. The headboards are shaped like Galician stones with embroidery in greens and yellows, mimicking the lichens that form on the rocks. The lobby sofa resembles the Abalar stone, which is said to break, and where sailors must work together to move it, as one person alone cannot. The famous Abalar stone is one of the Galician rocking stones attributed with various properties and is believed to be where the Virgin of the Barca arrived in Muxía to encourage Santiago.

Local woods such as eucalyptus, oak, and chestnut are prominently featured in the décor.

The “Costa da Morte” Parador is a unique and distinctive location where interior design and architecture are seamlessly integrated.
